Be a Better Energy Saver!

Our Energy Conservation Program

In 2002, Yahoo! implemented an energy saving program to help reduce our energy costs as well as to practice conservation. Through the program, energy savings are projected to be approximately 15% annually.

The following are a few examples of energy-efficient practices at Yahoo!:

  • Yahoo! purchased “green power” near its headquarters, equivalent to more than one half of the energy produced by one large-scale wind turbine. This is comparable to planting 216 acres of trees or removing 140 cars from the road for a year
  • Yahoo!’s Hillsboro office is 100% powered by renewable power. The Quincy, WA data center, which is under development, will be powered by hydroelectric energy
  • Yahoo! installed window film on the Sunnyvale campus in March 2006, reducing energy costs by an additional 5%
  • Yahoo! utilizes controls that turn off non-essential lighting and other energy usage, helping to reduce Yahoo!’s energy consumption by as much as 6%
  • Yahoo! participates in rebate programs from local utilities to upgrade mechanical systems with energy-efficient products
  • Many of our data centers—which represent a large part of our overall energy consumption—utilize “green energy” such as passive cooling to reduce our impact.

An ongoing effort is under way to identify areas where Yahoo! can conserve energy and other resources as we continue to improve on the efficiencies of the programs currently in place.
